Re: Harlem, 2017
The Schomburg Center's Public Programs team capped off a stunning summer 2017 season with a celebration of Dianne Smith's dynamic new multimedia artwork inspired by her own Afro-Caribbean roots. For this reception held in the Langston Hughes Lobby, the Schomburg Center partnered with Columbia University's new initiative, Uptown Triennial, highlighting artists in upper Manhattan and Harlem. Smith juxtaposed images of Harlem culled from the Schomburg Center collections with photographs she took in the neighborhood over the past 20 years. The result is a beautiful montage that blends video, visual graphics, and motion pictures that tell the story of Harlem's past, present, and future, its landscape, culture, and people. Curator SouLéo and Dj Stormin' Norman were also on hand with Smith for great conversation, art, and music. Photo credit: William Farringotn
