Some Sing: A Juneteenth Celebration was a Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts campus-wide jubilee honoring the richness of Black sound and aesthetics in all their vernacular and complex forms. Dianne Smith’s intricate costume and scenic designs created a visual tapestry, immersing the audience in a journey through time. Rux's vision celebrated music as a unifying force, an agent of growth and freedom, invoking its roles in work songs, prison laments, spirituals, and commemorations. Across different performance spaces, audiences experienced the sounds of influential free-jazz experimentalist Cooper-Moore, Bronx-born soul musician Stephanie McKay, and others, culminating in a powerful concert led by Herb Alpert Award-winning composer Toshi Reagon (Parable of the Sower) and her full band.
